Well another tour in the bag, and it was a doooozy! The video actually sums it up perfectly. We had terrible weather, we lost our minds, we played shows, we probably de-evolved a bit. But it was all worth it!
What the video doesn't show is me laughing to myself on a park bench for 20 minutes and the others parading around with stuffed animals as their children. Some people would just say 'shit happens'...I say 'Hamilton happens' ...and boy did it ever happen to us!
We have to give a big thank you to Tayson from Last Chance Marie for doing our merch on this tour and not losing his mind. He was the rock, the sanity, the ...good smelling one.
We want to thank everyone who let us use their homes to sleep along the way, it really did matter immensely to us, helping to keep what little shred of human normalcy we had left.
It was so much fun to spend time with our long lost friends in Seas and FCR. They are some amazing people so go and support them by liking their facebook pages and following on twitter.
Also big-ultra-huge thanks to Hippy for joining us on stage in Toronto!
In other news we have updated our online store so don't be naked, go buy a shirt! Keep an eye out for new things to come this fall in our merch dept.
In even BIGGER news we have another tour to announce! Our buddies in This Is A Standoff were easily hypnotized into taking us on tour at the end of October. This will be in support of their new EP Be Delighted coming out September 1st. Exact dates will be posted shortly. This will be a great time so make sure to mark your calendar when we hit your city. ...and maybe let us sleep in you homes so rich won't need to deficate on your local mall? Just a thought... no... a promise!
We have a bunch of pictures to post from the recent tour also so stand by for that!

The workin' man...

new show, new tour, new member, SAME SMELL
Sooo what have we been up to you might ask? Well nothing really. ok maybe some secret stuff but pretend i didn't say that. It's time yet again to announce some
Our long slow search for the last piece of the puzzle has ended. Sparrows is proud to say the lineup is complete now that Krys Blaney is manning the second
guitar position. We are very excited for Krys to be in the band so normally I'd say something like 'go follow him on twitter!!! and say hello!' but
I don't think he has one so just...go follow him... like on the streets and stuff. Not too close, I think he knows karate.
Other great news is we have a show on August 6th at Cafe Dekcuf in Ottawa with O'brother and Currents here's the facebook link. Adding to that there is a tour in the works for the
end of August so keep checking the tour section of the site for updates.
While we were gone/home promoting the new EP (thanks everyone who bought a copy!) we were pleased to get positive feedback from some reviews. Check them out:
EXCLAIM, MUSIC SHE BLOGGED
And finally check out our updated flickr and facebook pages for all our latest photos from the EP release tour, and show with our favorite guys in CUNTER!
...and remember kids, it's never time for racist jokes. for real. EVER.

Sparrows Albatros tour footage.

Back from tour!
Well that was fun! We are back from a great time on the road fully sleep deprived and sick as expected but well worth it. Huge thanks to all the clubs and people who came out to see us play with all the other great bands.
Lots pictures are floating around so take a look on our facebook page and also here for some sweet Bovine pics by Liz Gareri. Some more will pop up on flickr soon so keep checking that too.
You learn a lot on tour. For starters I learned that guys who are being chased by either the cops or drug dealers will become the nicest people on earth if they need an exit. I also learned that
Rich is a tough guy, he slept in the van and didn't complain... I think he enjoyed it! I learned that Hippy can blow up a mean air mattress without instructions! And finally I learned that there is such a thing as 2 clowns falling in love and sharing cream pies. If you haven't already, make sure you check out our tour mates Albatros. They were more than awesome to tour with, can't wait to see them again.
If you are still on the fence about getting our album just head over to facebook and check out our sexy new band page with 3, yes THREE songs! Just 'like' us and enjoy the listen.
Stay tuned for tour video footage!

hide your kids, hide your wife, cuz they sparrows be hittin' the road
We've been very busy like birds...or bees... whatever... The point is, it's finally tour time and we are coming to a town near YOU. (if that town is Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, or Brampton) Sparrows are piling into our newly cleaned van and are taking off. We were so happy to get our shipment of t-shirts, CDs, and some other special stuff, they really look great and will look even better on YOU. yeah I'm talking to YOU. Our EP, Goliath officailly 'drops' today so head to our online store and pick it up! Listen to it ten times before our show, then come out and sing along (Dan needs help remembering what the words are!) We've also lowered the price from $10 to $7, magical. There's still lots of special packages up for grabs so check those out too.
If you might be on the fence about our music all I can say with any certainty is that you are clearly lacking in.... another song to help you decide! so head over to our buds at Project Rodney and GET A FREE DIGITAL DOWNLOAD of one track!
What could be much better than all this you ask? Getting some fine t-shirts for our fans, releasing our shiny new album, cleaning our dirty van? How about finding a new member! Oh Yeah! We are very pumped to introduce the one and only Rich Hill as the latest member of sparrows. Rich will be melting faces on stage while playing bass with us!
We are clearly very happy. See YOU soon!

Recording Video 4
Posted by: marco , 2011-04-10 17:47:16
I guess it's time we played a show?
We are currently wrapping up the EP and are pleased to announce some shows for you!
This is the second video installment from our initial visit to the Pine Room to record our upcoming EP. Also check out flickr for some new photos we added.
Stay tuned for tour dates, cd release info, and more crazy videos!

LOOK WHO'S BACK! ...in the studio
We have returned to the Pine Room to finish some outstanding vocals from the initial session. Things are rolling great. Dan's voice sounds strong and we all smell fantastic. We also had the chance to pick up our trailer last night. It went so smoothly and without any incident at all.
Ok who actually believes THAT!? We had to drive alongside crazy motorists trying to kill us, Dan got his new shoes muddy, we had no hook-up wires for the brake lights, wrong sized ball on the hitch, had to use a saws-all and disc grinder to cut through the hitch lock that we had no keys for, ....and of course in the dark. Thanks for all the help Brando, we would have been screwed without you!
SO all in all we basically must have looked like we stole the trailer. It is a sweet trailer though and it even has leather on it! ...that's right ON it...

You'll thank me later.
Just wanted to keep everyone up to date on things.
We had so much fun in the studio that we are going back very soon to add some more vocals to the songs. There will be fun, baklava, burritos, wii bowling, gloating, showering, and even maybe some singing going down.
There's also a bunch of work being done on merch and designs. Stay tuned for that very soon.
We are also currently getting dates ready for a tour in May so clear all your calendars.
I called in to work for you all. You can thank me later but I managed to get you all fired! That's great so now you have time to follow us fom city to city! What? You have "plans"!?!? Don't worry! That wedding you had to attend, it's off, I called and talked them out of it (you're welcome). That birthday you thought you had to go to, postponed dude to weather. The all night LAN party you planned, won't be happening (common!). The trip to the doctor that you've been waiting for to get that thing looked at, not necessary. The family vacation you planned last year and put money down for... the airline shut down 'misteriously'. That hot date you were gonna finally leave the house for that took you almost 12 months to get so that your parents would just stop asking when you were getting married and if you even had interest in not being alone your whole life... that too is cancelled.
See you there.

Recording is finished. For now. I think I speak for both (or all 3?) of us when I say we had the best time doing this. It was all better than best case scenario. First off we need to thank Kenny, Lisa, Jacob, Boba, and Empi for letting us stay with them and being the best hosts known to man. They put up with our odd habits, showering, lack of showering, gloating, false starts, awesome accidents, cooking, jokes, opinions, and sandslide skills. If it wasn't for them being so open to making us comfortable this EP wouldn't have gotten the attention and care it deserved.
We had the chance to meet lots of great people and hear lots of great music over the 2 weeks. We also made some wicked new friends. I'm very proud of what we recorded and even more proud of how well we worked together trying to make this thing perfect.
I'll get to specific thanks in the liner notes when it's all said and done but for everyone who supported us, lent us gear, brought us food, and showed us a good time, you made it that much better for us.
For me a producer is like a doctor. They get everything ready and take care of the details so that we can deliver our baby. But it's still up to us to do the pushing. Kenny's awesome work ethic and attention to detail really guided this little sucker right out of us and I can't wait to show it to everyone.
For some idea of what went down check out the video footage below.

Vocals day 2. We all have a wii bowling problem. We need help. So. Much. Help. Just one more throw...
Long day of making throat sounds. Things are going well though. My brain isn't working right now for some reason.
We are going to a show tonight at the Bovine to celebrate their 20 years in business! That should be fun times.
Tonight's show was headlined by the Black Lungs with a secret set played by Moneen! Moneen stole the night. SO much intensity and heart. These guys are on fire and loving every minute. They make playing look so easy and make me look like a senior citizen. I got physically tired watching them go nuts on stage, I hope we can get to that point one day. The amount of hair flying, sweat spraying and near collisions were just overwhelming. It was my first time seeing them and hopefully not my last.
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-19 14:24:56
Vocals day 1. Hot water, check. Honey, check. Throat Coat, check. Baby toys, check. We had our favourite executive producer Jacob sitting in today. He wasn't too hard on Dan even when he clearly wasn't belting out the hits. At one point Dan finished a take and was greeted with a loud screaming high-pitched squeal that only could have meant "Good job buddy!, but can you please turn down the suck?"
Just kidding, he had a great day tracking. We even made it out to the local Long and McQuade to look around and get some stuff. It's pretty big compared to Ottawa! I'm sure I'd be broke if I lived around here.
We had pizza and rolo ice cream for dinner. That's like 3 food groups right there.
I'm officially starting to go nuts, I need to play drums asap.
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-17 21:11:19
Bass day 2. Dan is rolling through like a tank. It feels nice getting closer to all the instrument takes being done and preparing for vocals. At this point only 2 songs are left to put the bass on.
Last night was a rare early night, we were done by 12:30 so naturally we filled the rest of the usual "day" with wii skills competitions. During one bowling match the three of us were 1 point away from each other. It was neck and neck.... then Kenny got 4 strikes in a row. These moments always start the same, Kenny: 'hey anyone want to play wii bowling?... we don't have to , ya know if you don't want it's ok....' We then talk shit, then get whoooopped. Dan managed to come out on top for one of the power bowl events but in the end the top spot went to Kenny. Then it was on to home run derby practice. Not only did he beat me he also got some sort of bronze, then silver medal. Once again Kenny won. Then it was tennis accuracy.... we tied! ... with one point each. It was freakin' hard haha. You have to really be there, this guy is all game. He's exerting himself so hard he's sliding into the floor, tackling all the kids' toys in his blast radius, and pretty much being in the zone.
A really big thanks goes out to Lisa for putting up with all the loud tracking late into the night and especially the rowdy video game hollering going even later.
Tonight should be fun as we are going to go see Moving Mountains at the Garrison. This band is very impressive.
More bass to be played, fetch my rod!
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-16 15:05:24
Bass day 1. Guitars are DONE! So happy. We captured only the finest ideas and tones. Bass on the other hand took us for ever to get working but in the end we got it sounding proper. By proper I mean sludgy and dirtier than a toilet toothbrush. Big thanks to Greg for lending us some basses to work with today. Greg and Kenny both play in Hunter, that band I keep talking about that is so sweet.
Everyone in the house is getting or feeling a cold coming on, so far I'm avoiding it. I think it's my steady cookie diet.
Seeing as how this is a post about bass we just want to remind everyone that we are still looking for a bass player so please email us at gmail/facebook, or hit us on twitter.
slappin' de bass, over and out.

Guitars part 4. After a low key day off we were ready to hit things hard again. Yesterday was spent eating and sleeping and shopping for food. Trifecta. More crazy news, on my day off I actually watched some t.v.! I know... weird, but this animated show called "Ugly Americans" is hilarious if you are into zombies, koalas, demons, talking fish, and flying man-birds that scream obscene things.
I can't even explain how cool the sounds are that we made today. They aren't even guitar tones just massive swells of pedal sounds that make me think of attacking robots from mars or something. I'm glad everyone is in the creative zone right now. There are great ideas being recorded. Some sound happy, some evil, some like a blender... most like a happy blender about to turn evil. If that makes any sense.
For dinner tonight, Burrito Boys! I hope one of these comes to Ottawa. Mucho bang for the buck.
Dan is a machine, he's been tracking all day. My hand would have fallen off by now.
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-14 19:43:34
Guitars part 3. I can't even explain the things we've done to the songs... it's really insane to think how many layers are going on at once. There's a crap load of Telecasters, a Les Paul, and even some baritone guitars making their way into the sound scape. The mix is thick. We still haven't even done bass yet! I swear I couldn't hear the drums for a while just from the amount of guitar saturation. The Dan-Kenny combo is proving quite insane for the tones and ideas. Dan is nailing all the guitar takes like a pro. Not a mo, a pro. See a pro is a professional. A mo is a mofessional...same level of quality but with money involved... that isn't us! haha.
We worked late into the night last night and all got a little loopy by the end of it. Every second word or sound was a reason to laugh like a crazy person. Nic ( a sick drummer ) came to hang a bit last night too.
For those of you keeping track of our Sandslides battle on Kenny's iphone, late last night Nic, a newcomer to the game, took the lead wiping both Kenny and I off the map. It was quite impressive how fast he learned and overtook us.
BAD NEWS DUDE NO ONE BEATS ME AT SANDSLIDE AND WALKS AWAY.... I beat your score this morning. ( don't hurt me )
Tonight's going to be fun. There's another HUNTER show and we are going! I really dig this band. The sheer intensity is something to experience first hand for sure.
Things are coming along nicely, lots of progress being made. Kenny screams like a ninja when he burps.
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-13 17:25:35
Guitars day 2. I think I've heard every kind of delay sound combo possible by now...I also think I want to buy a delay pedal haha. We uploaded some more pictures to facebook and flickr. It's become a usual night closing event to watch episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Walking Dead or Californication. These shows are really well done. Now our days are filled mocking limp knuck-bumps and preparing for zombie emergencies. I think if things go bad Dan will be eaten first because he actually just fell asleep on his guitar while sitting up in a chair. (It's been some long days! Plus drum edits are his Kryptonite...)
There was also a very riveting game of wii bowling late last night with Nic. I need to get to the store and find a copy of Rayman Raving Rabbids for Kenny, he thinks I'm nuts just from the title but once he plays I'm sure he'll see the light.
We are nearing the half-way point of our recording time and things are starting to really come together. Sometimes I feel like the sound coming out of the speakers isn't us, it's our professional stand-ins. Wait..maybe it is!? Did you actually think we were going to come all this way and do all this work? HA!
I also need to go buy a massage chair. asap.
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-11 16:13:03
Today is day 1 of guitars. Dan is all hocked up on ice tea and vitamin c. Setting up felt good and testing out all the amp/head combos with all these different guitars sounded amazing! The tones we are getting are all huge and thick. Kenny and Dan went nuts with delay pedals for a bit, there's going to be a lot of layers on these tracks. Dan is super pumped and can barely sit still, it's funny there's lots of fist pumping and bumping... maybe some dumping?
Dan finished a couple layers of leads and rhythms for one song, and I think we all fell off our chairs when it punched in. When we have bass on this song I'm sure the walls will cave in.
We ate at Licks tonight, my first time, pretty nice slab of beef! I have to really give huge thanks to Kenny and Lisa for feeding us so much all week. They are too nice to us, no joke. And on that note Nic just arrived and he's brought BAKLAVA!!!
p.s. For the record Kenny has my back. Just sayin' .......bump it...
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-10 21:54:27
DAYS 3 to 5
Drum tracking is done! I'm a little sad because now I don't get to play for 8 hours every day but I get to start hearing some takes so that's pretty great. I'm really liking how the kit was miked, these should be some great sounding drums. P H A T... like bacon. Guitars will be starting very soon and I know Dan is super excited for that. I can't wait to hear the tones we will be getting, there's so many amps here!!!
We've been having some issues with the video stuff so there wont be any right away but we are working on it. Check our flickr for photos though! We will keep adding to that as we go.
After playing these tunes a ton of times I'm real happy to be working with someone who has such an attention to detail, it really has helped my parts and the record as a whole. Also big shout out to our assistant producers: Boba, Empi, and Jacob. The first two produce lots of fur, the last produces some snot and lots of smiles.
Update from Dan: He has finished watching season 3 of Californication and is now starting LOST. Solid effort Dan!
In other news today I beat Kenny's high score at Sandslides on his iphone. Turns out no one knows sand quite like I do right now. So I'm gloating a bit...
Well back to work!
In the immortal words of Kenny Bridges: "excuse me, I just threw up in my mouth"

DAYS 1 and 2
Tracking drums these first 2 days has been great! I've learned a ton, it's nice to be able to geek out with recording tips and gear. We updated our flickr with new photos from some drum takes and setup. There's nothing better than capping a bunch of hours of drumming with a sweet late night show. We had a nice treat being able to see HUNTER live last night. They absolutely tore up the place...literally I think Kenny broke another tuning peg on the bass, and there was some sort of hanging traffic light that looked out of order when it was all over.
Oh who's this Kenny guy I speak of? Well it turns out we are pretty freakin excited and lucky to be working with the one and only Kenny Bridges of Moneen as producer for our EP! Our music is in great hands, and we are super appreciative of how nice him and his family have been to us. Way above and beyond anything we thought.
Tomorrow there's more drums to be drummed. If I had to quantify the amount of drums I'd say there's a wide load... maybe...oversized load.... oh never mind...
Posted by: marco , 2011-02-06 23:33:50
It's almost time to leave for recording! On Friday I suspect I'll feel like Steve Martin yelling "the new phonebook's here!" It's finally all coming together, the time, effort, talent, sweat, lack of showers...
Just like the phonebook, our EP will be forgotten and overlooked by many, stolen by some, and passed on by others. But to us IT'S FREAKIN AMAZING!!!!!!! For some people it will be just another record ho hum... but to us it's not even a joke we get all nuts like Steve every time we play our songs. It's just a big deal ok?
For those other than Dan and I it's sort of impossible to comprehend how our expectations of this EP were nothing like the reality that is unfolding. We planned to write great songs, then we wrote them, then we practiced our butts off, and it was all so magical and and and!!!!! then everything changed with our new lineup change, and even more recent new input from a certain producer who shall remain nameless for now.
Long story short, our expectations do not match the reality of where the songs are now and it's really quite scary, yet familiar. I mean no matter how hard people try, you just can't predict the future. It never really turns out exactly as you imagine does it? In our case this was an awesome thing to have happen because the music we thought was so amazing just got a lot more amazing and we can't wait to share it with you all very soon.
So in the words of Steve,
Things are going to start happening to me now.

As we move forward towards our studio time in February I've been getting into some "new" music. I use new as a relative term because I find that I'm stuck in the 90's. Yes I can admit it. Once you start writing music and playing in bands your time to sit back and enjoy records is hit or miss, go figure. I try to keep up but it's as if I know there's tons of great stuff out there and it will still be there when I'm finally caught up and can listen. Best not wait too long though, I definitely did that with a few bands that no longer exist and I now have to imagine what they'd be like live!
Since Sparrows began I've been trying to poke my head out more often and see if there's anything current I like. So today I want you to say hello to two records that could not be more sonically different yet equally from the same place deep down where you have to dig for honesty and true authenticity in music. And I just learned of them this year!
Axe to Fall, by Converge had me ready to headbutt through walls and eat fire for fun. It just pumps me up. It's from 2009, not bad! Only 2 years old. The band however has been around since the 90s (yes!) and I'm only now discovering them.
Spark, by long time epic musician, and recent Crooked Vulture, Alain Johannes makes my day any day. These songs could not be more honest and true. Written and recorded in tribute after the recent passing of his wife, equally epic musician Natasha Shneider. This one's from 2010, I'm almost a visionary! 2010 is like wayyyy in the future for a guy like me.
Listen to both, then try to tell me they are not from the same head space. It might take a few spins but you'll get what I mean.
...on an unrelated note, Robocop is on and, why is it so hard to shoot a mechanical cop that walks everywhere at negative 100 mph?.... just saying.

sparrows part 5
Posted by: marco , 2011-01-02 20:06:18
We are sparrows, and would like to welcome you to our new online home while we get ready to record and release our first ep in 2011! We will be posting regular videos, songs, and studio updates so check back often. If you want to get involved, show us support, or just write hate mail check out our facebook, twitter, and other social media pages.
At this time we are super excited to announce that we are working with independent Ottawa label Finish What You Started Records! If you haven't heard of them go to their website and see what Jeff has been up to. We are looking forward to a great working relationship, and appreciate his awesome support thus far. Thanks Jeff!
Of course there's much more big news to tell you about but we're going to hang on to that for just a bit longer.
Even though this band hasn't been around for very long, this has been a long time coming, and I think my band mates would agree.
